Cruz blames GMA for people’s distrust
LINGAYEN–Dagupan Archbishop Oscar Cruz said President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo only has herself to blame for the lingering doubt among majority of the people about the credibility of Malacañang’s pronouncement that the 2010 elections will push through.
Cruz, in an interview with The PUNCH, said Arroyo has repeatedly committed duplicity, citing as an example how she announced that she would not run for president again but eventually did in 2004.
He added as examples the ‘Hello Garci’ controversy and the botched NBN-ZTE deal.
President Arroyo earlier personally vouched for the holding of general elections next year in her speech on the merger of Lakas and Kampi, the country’s two largest political parties.
Cruz, a staunch critic of Mrs. Arroyo, said it is hard to imagine that someone who has duplicity of her statements will immediately become credible by merely citing the Lakas-Kampi merger as a sign there will be elections as scheduled next year.
“The distrust of the people is caused by a distrustful President,” he said.
He said the questions that continue to linger are: Will there really be synchronized elections; Will the polls be credible, peaceful, orderly, etc?; Supposing Malacañang would not be contented with the result, will she declare failure of elections and move for a transition government with her at the helm?; Will there be Charter change and will she run again in the Parliament to eventually become the Prime Minister?#
