Quirimit is king of Pista’y Dayat cycling
FORMER RP national rider Arnel Quirimit orchestrated a four-man breakaway group halfway through the race and displayed a burst of speed in the last 300 meters to outsprint his three partners to rule the 2009 Pista’y Dayat Cycling Classic held on May 1.
His effort won him P20,000 for the top prize and a huge trophy.
Umingan son Santy Barnachea, Nueva Ecijanos Oscar Rendole and Joel Calderon who stuck with Quirimit from start to finish landed a close second, third and fourth, respectively.
Confident and with more to spare, the internationally-experienced Quirimit, 34, of Pozorrubio, was only threatened by his three breakaway partners during the final sprint at the finish line in Lucap. Alaminos City.
The four clocked the 168-kilometer, well-paved trek that passed the coastal towns of Pangasinan in four hours, 12 minutes and 32 seconds.
Eric Feliciano, also from Nueva Ecija, came in fifth.
Others that landed in the top ten were: Llyod Reynante of Muntinlupa City; Rex Carino, Mangaldan; Edgardo Bolleser, San Manuel, Pangasinan; Alfredo Asuncion, Nueva Ecija; and Joseph Millanes, Paniqui, Tarlac.
The event, the biggest bike race so far this year in Pangasinan with 70 prominent cyclists participating, was flagged off at Tondaligan Beach by Bonuan Gueset barangay chairman Angel Gumarang and Arthur Tangco representing Dagupan City Mayor Al Fernandez Jr.
It was organized by Paolo Calzo of Sonshine Radio and sponsored by Creamsilk shampoo, Cobra energy drink, Clusivol multivitamins and Wings detergent bar soap.
The wheel-by-wheel account was aired live from start to finish over DZRD Sonshine Radio 981 Khz AM.—JAGJr.
