Centrex-VMUF wins in National Athletic Championship

LINGAYEN—Centrex-Virgen Milagrosa University Foundation in San Carlos City emerged overall champion in the junior division for boys and girls of the three-day National Open Invitational Athletic Championship which ended Tuesday.

Centrex-VMUF, the lone team from Pangasinan that participated in the event, amassed 181 points for its biggest win ever in national and international competitions.

The group won eight gold medals, four silver, and three bronzes with Lany Cardona of Bolinao harvesting four gold and one silver.

The other Pangasinan athletes who brought home gold medals were Blessie Mae Sanchez who prevailed in the 400 meter dash in the girls division, and Junelle Gallebo in the 400 mater dash for boys.

Maricris Carolino bagged the silver in the 400 meter dash for girls and Rochille Corpuz in the triple jump, women division.

The bronze medalists were Jonathan Leyga in the boys’ 400 meter dash and Sarah Jane Pascua in shotput girls division.

The 10,000 meter walk was also dominated by the Centrex-VMUF athletes Vanessa Membrado in the girls division and Mark Anthony Niro in the boys division.

Meanwhile, Manila-based Far Eastern University in Manila took the top spot in the senior division with 143 points.

The meet, sponsored by the Philippine Amateur Track and Field Association (PATAFA) and held at the Narviso Narciso Ramos Civic and Sports Center here, was participated in by 42 teams including those from Brunei, South Korea, Chinese Taipei, Malaysia-Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia-Sandakan, Singapore, Vietnam.

More than 600 local athletes participated in the meet, which forms part of a series of events to select those who will see action in the South East Asian Games in Laos.

Behind FEU in the senior division are University of Baguio (UB) with 102 points, followed by the Philippine Army which finished with 81 points.

Trailing Centrex-VMUF in the junior division is FEU, which garnered 105 points with UB in third at 91 overall points.

FEU is women’s division champion with 131 points while VMUF is also the girls’ division champion with 123 points.

The Philippine Air Force (PAF) prevailed in the all-Armed Forces of the Philippines showdown followed by Philippine Navy.

The meet was hosted jointly by the provincial government of Pangasinan headed by Governor Amado Espino Jr. and the Dagupan City government headed by Mayor Alipio Fernandez Jr., who is also PATAFA chairman.—LM
