Bigger Bangus Festival assured next year

Undaunted by the stress brought upon her by the hectic program she lined up for the recently concluded Bangus Festival, Vice Mayor Belen Fernandez promised a bigger and more exciting Bangus Festival next year.

She made the assurance after Mayor Alipio Fernandez Jr. said the vice mayor will head the “2010 Dagupan Festival and beyond”.

The vice mayor, as chairperson of the executive committee, expressed her gratitude to all who helped and supported the 2009 Dagupan Bangus Festival, which was hailed as a success.

Fernandez credited her fellow officials and co-workers in the city government for their “untiring efforts” and the sponsors for their unqualified support.

At the same time, she promised that short-comings met during the festival have been noted and assured that improvements will be made in the next festival.

She said a post-event evaluation, identifying the positive and negative aspects of the organization, was already undertaken by the project’s executive committee.

The Bangusan Street Party, the concluding event of the celebration, was identified as the event that needs more fine-tuning given the logistical problems created by the unexpected huge atten-dance and interest it generated.

This year, about a million people participated in the event and posed a security nightmare for the police. Although no major untoward incident was reported, there were reports of thefts and a vehicular accident in a road leading to the event site.

Nonetheless, Fernandez hailed the event as successful given the unprecedented number of people who joined.

“Because of the big crowd that packed the Bangusan Street Party and really enjoyed it, the many long hours and sleepless nights that we spent for the preparations were all well worth it,” she said.

She said that not even the unexpected rains that fell on the Festivals of the North held last April 27, stopped the crowd from watching the colorful performances.

“We really felt happy when we (referring to Mayor Fernandez and herself) and the rest of the councilors, joined the parade under the rain,” she said.

“That was a demonstration of the city administration’s battle cry ‘One vision, one voice, united action’,” she added.

Fernandez also said apart from providing entertainment, the Bangus Festival succeeded in propelling the economy.

“Our focus was to entertain the people of Dagupan and to support the local traders, especially the bangus raisers and dealers, to help improve the local economy,” she said.-LM
