IN consideration of the current economic crisis, all but five of the 86 colleges and universities in Region 1 will not increase tuition fees in the coming school year beginning June.

Dr. Evelyn Pascua, regional director of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) in the Ilocos Region, told local newsmen in Dagupan City Monday that the incoming school year will have least number of colleges and universities that will hike tuition fees.

The five colleges and universities that have been given approval to increase rates are the University of Pangasinan in Dagupan City, Perpetual Help College in Malasiqui, Divine Word College and the Northwestern University in Laoag, and St. Louis University in La Union.

The five institutions will apply a minimum five percent hike.

Pascua said 15 schools originally applied for a tuition fee increase to be implemented this June but CHED appealed to them to maintain existing rates due to economic difficulties.

“Others applied for increase but withdrew later because of our appeal to consider the economic crisis nowadays,” Pascua said.

Last year, CHEDgranted tuition fee increases by as much as 12 percent to about 24 educational institutions in the region, Pascua added.

Pascua advised incoming freshmen to take up Education courses (with majors in English, Math and Science), Information Technology and Accountancy courses which lead to more job opportunities. #
