College prof in hot water
URDANETA CITY–What is college education about?
This question is central to the issue involving a professor at the Pangasinan State University (PSU)-Urdaneta being investigated for giving failing grades to an academically outstanding graduating student for incurring absences due to his extra-curricular activities.
A fact-finding committee, headed by Dr. Linda Cabancla, has been formed upon the order of Dr. Victoriano Estira, university president, to look into the case against Dr. Paulo V. Cenas, math professor, filed by James Canindo, 20, and his father, Pastor Jesus Canindo, a former Manila Bulletin employee.
Canindo, a recipient of a four-year scholarship from 4th District Rep. Jose de Venecia Jr., was listed last February among the candidates to graduate on April but was shocked to learn in March that he flunked his four subjects under Cenas.
Cenas gave the young Canindo failing grades in “Multivariate Analysis,” “Experimental Analysis” and “Time Series Analysis,” and “conditional failureā in “Introduction to Regression Analysis.”
Cenas asserts that the student had incurred several absences due to his extracurricular activities as president of the student council and associate editor of the campus publication.
The elder Canindo has also asked Dr. Evangeline Pascua, Commission on Higher Education (CHEd) regional director, to look into the case.
