AFTER four years of absence, the annual Mapandan cycling, which was traditionally held during the town fiesta, will be revived on April 19.

The “Calimlim Cycling Cup” will be exclusively for Pangasinan professional-amateur pedal-pushers and will be run in three classes: the master-executive, team-time-trial and the open event.

Mayor Jose Ferdinand Calimlim Jr., who initiated the event’s revival, said cash prizes, trophies and medals are at stake for all the winners and survivors of the races.

Prominent cyclists from Pangasinan cycling are expected to participate.

“We are reviving the cycling event because the annual summer cycling spectacle called Padyak Pinoy is around the corner and the Mapandan affair could be a very good tune-up race for our Pangasinan riders,” said Calimlim.

“And this cycling event loved by our fellow Pangasinenses is one of our contributions for the development of our athletes in the province which was started by Gov. Amado Espino,” Calimlim said.

Councilor Mamerto Eden Jr., the event chairman, said the first race will start at 9:00 a.m. and the participants in each category will traverse the roads of barangays Torres, Lambayan (Mapandan), Mawakat (Manaoag), Catablan via sitio Guam (Urdaneta City), Menien, Tebag, Matic-Matic, Banaoang, Ventinella, Tuliao and Gueguesangen (Sta. Barbara), then back to Mapandan via brgys. Nilombot, Golden, Apaya and Poblacion.

The cyclists will negotiate the same route twice in each category with an approximate total distance of 54 kilometers.—JAG, Jr.
