Three Dagupan studes cited as DOST’s Young Achievers

The Department of Science and Technology-Regional Office No. I (DOST-1) has given recognition to Ilocos’ young achievers in international science and mathematics competitions through the agency’s Youth Excellence in Science (YES) Award.

Leading the awardees is Sarah Jane Cua of Pangasinan Universal Institute (PUI) in Dagupan who has won the gold and bronze medals in the International Mathematics Competitions held in Singapore and Thailand over the last two years.

Other awardees from Pangasinan are Mark John Dy of Mother Goose Special School Systems (MGSSS) in Dagupan City, who brought home the bronze medal in the China Primary Olympiad held in Yi Chang, China in August and Isaiah Paolo Lee from the same school who received the silver medal during the Po Leung Kuk 12thPrimary Math World Contest held in Hong Kong in July 2008.

Elsewhere in the region, YES medals were given to Jakov Ivan Dumbrique of Saint Paul College (SPC) in Ilocos Sur; Federico De Jesus , Aeben Gawidan and Paul Christian B. Yang-Ed from the Philippine Science High School – Ilocos Region Campus (PSHS-IRC) in San Ildefonso, Ilocos Sur; and Sharmaine B. Cabaltera of the University of Northern Philippines (UNP) in Vigan City.

Now on its second year, 215 students have been conferred with the YES awards for 1008 while 73 medals were awarded in 2007.

The DOST, through the Science Education Institute (SEI), institutionalized the YES Award for exemplary achievement of the youth in the fields of science and mathematics. #
