JHARRSEL Builders and Supply team, with its wily point guard Mario Cabacungan successfully unleashing a buzzer-beating 18-footer perimeter shot, prevailed as the champion in the recently concluded Mayor’s Cup 2008-09 Mangaldan Inter-Commercial Basketball Tournament.

Jharrsel nipped the Mangaldan Sports Club (MSC), 78-76, in the second game of the best-of-three championship series held on February 21 the Macario Ydia Development Center.

With barely five seconds to go, a trapped Cabacungan received an inbound pass from a teammate, dribbled thrice and tossed a Hail Mary basket that sank in to break the final deadlock and gave the team the championship victory.

“Luckily, we survived the game or else it could be another story if a rubber-match will be done,” said Jharrsel manager Engr. Joey Aquino.

“We had an opportunity to put the game away (early) but credit to MSC, they were determined to win to force the third and final match and that made the game electrifying and tensed.”

After trailing by ten points at the start of the fourth and final period, five-foot-eleven guard Gian Samson spearheaded MSC’s comeback with numerous penetration shots with Potpot Mejia doing the treys and Macmac Magalong grabbing the boards.

The match saw four deadlocks in the last two minutes, bringing spectators on their feet to cheer their respective teams.

Cabacungan and center Rodel Santos came to Jharrsel’s rescue, countering every MSC’s key baskets until Santos fouled out and Cabacungan converted the championship shot.

Earlier, Jazysports beat GAP for the third place slot.

The bounce-by-bounce account of the championship match was aired live over DZRD Sonshine Radio, 981 Khz AM.—JAG,Jr.
