Jeepney operators win vs. “barkers”

The jeepney drivers and operators were delighted to see that their daily nemesis, the Public Order and Safety Office (POSO) in Dagupan, is after all their ally.

It was the POSO who came to their rescue last Tuesday when they complained about the “barkers” who extorted from them in loading and unloading points in the city.

Benny Aquino, president of Alliance of United Transport Organization Provincewide (AUTO-Pro), said the “barkers” vanished after the POSO warned the latter that they would be arrested by the police if they did not leave the jeepney drivers alone.

Aquino also attributed the smoother flow of traffic in the city’s main avenues to the disappearance of the “barkers”. He pointed to the “barkers” as the main cause of clogging of vehicles in loading and unloading zones.

Jeepney drivers complained that in all loading and unloading zones, the “barkers” operated and demanded a minimum of P5 as service fee for loading passengers into the parked jeepneys.

Aquino lamented that the racket of the “barkers” could have been stopped earlier if POSO had acted sooner.

Aquino and Alliance of Concerned Transport Organization (ACTO) national president Efren de Luna appealed for help against the barkers before the Sangguniang Panlungsod on Monday. – LM
