Irrigation rehab for San Fabian farmers

SAN FABIAN–An irrigation system in Barangay Binday here is now being modified and rehabilitated to provide water to about 2,026 hectares of farmland and benefit some 1,600 farmers in the town and neighboring municipalities.

The renovation of the Domuloc River Irrigation System that draws water from the Bued River costing P79 million, is funded by the Countrywide Development Fund of 4th District Rep. Jose de Venecia Jr.

De Venecia, along with his wife Gina, visited the project on Monday and commended the progress of the project construction under the supervision of the National Irrigation Administration.

Another P20 million is due for release to bankroll the construction of the distribution and lateral canals leading to various farms in San Fabian, San Jacinto and Manaoag.

Barangay chairmen in the beneficiary towns have asked De Venecia to push the NIA to complete the project by June this year to prevent flooding that might occur starting July this year.

Also present during DeVenecia’s visit were NIA Regional Director John Celeste and San Fabian Irrigation System chief Renato Millan.

Councilor Liza Cudilla of San Fabian, a farmer’s daughter, said the irrigation project is a big boon to farmers of rain-fedlands who worry about water supply during the summer months.

She said farmers are optimistic they can double their harvests of rice, corn, peanuts and burley tobacco once the irrigation project becomes functional.—LM
