LINGAYEN–The new Ilocos police regional director, Chief Superintendent Ramon Gatan, has directed all police units in the region to intensify the campaign against loose firearms.

Gatan, who was here Wednesday for the Regional Peace and Order Council (RPOC) meeting led by Gov. Amado Espino Jr., said while Region 1 still enjoys a good peace and order situation, he wants more checkpoints set up and for the police to aggressively pursue men with illegal firearms.

The checkpoints, he said, will limit the movement of armed men and the police will be active in its police intelligence operations and actions identifying and locating holders of loose firearms and guns-for-hire syndicates.

Espino rebuffs
Archbishop Cruz

Meanwhile, Espino again rebuffed Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Oscar Cruz who recently said that peace and order situation in Pangasinan is “bad”.

Cruz’s statement partly stems from the recent kidnapping of the grandson of Mangaldan’s mayor.

“To me, peace and order in Pangasinan is good and I have basis for saying this,” Espino said.

Citing police index reports, the governor said, crime volume in the first quarter went down while capacity to solve crimes was up by about three percent.

“Along the beach where I directed the police to patrol, many now enjoy going to these places even at midnight and the police even have to advise them to go home as its is already late. That to me is good peace and order,” Espino said, adding that the situation in the province has improved since he assumed office in 2007.#
