BIR disowns “BIR press corps”

THERE is no such thing as a BIR Press Corps.

This was revealed by Joseph Catapia, Revenue District 4 Officer, in a talk during the Kapehan sa Lenox hosted by the Pangasinan Press and Radio Club on Wednesday.

He clarified that his agency had nothing to do with the so-called BIR Press Corps, nor is privy to the reported illegal activities of the group.

“Nobody is authorized to use the name of the BIR without its approval,” said Catapia when informed that persons posing as mediamen in the province have been making the rounds identifying themselves as officers and members of the BIR Press Corp, extorting from businessmen.

Catapia warned the public against misrepresentation of the group and called on the business sector to report any encounter with the group to the BIR or the police.

He said he had received calls verifying the legitimacy of the group and he told them to call the police and have them arrested.

Meanwhile, Catapia appealed to taxpayers in Pangasinan to file their income tax returns on or before the April deadline and pay the correct amount of taxes to the government.

The BIR, the Philippine Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Philippine Association of Bookkeepers and Accountants have already conducted ‘tax caravans’ campaigning for early filing.—LM
