2 Pangasinan cyclists 2nd in Saipan race
TWO Pangasinan cyclists brought home honors for the Philippines by placing second in their respective categories at the 8th Annual Tour de Marianas held in Saipan on February 21 and 22.
San Carlos City native Bobby Mandapat and Mangaldan-born Mylene Garcia pedaled furiously in the race participated in by 58 cyclists from all over the world.
Guam-based Mandapat pocketed $200 after clocking 12 minutes behind Japanese cycling champion Ogasawara Takahiro who dominated the mountainous 74.5 kilometers event, winning both stages worth $300 in the elite-pro division.
The 28-year old Nippon, who had been to the world championship twice, clocked the two-day event in 2:16:59. Saipan resident Rennan Sublemente came in third for a $100 prize.
In the women’s division, Australian Melanie Daly won the event with some luck, beating first day winner Garcia who lost her track at the finish.
Garcia arrived at the finish line early, but was told she needed to take a round trip for missing parts of the track. She also won$200 for finishing second.
Garcia’s husband Jazy, despite coming in second on the second stage, finished fourth overall and first in the master’s division with a time of 2:29:50.
Stages three and four of the competition will be held in Guam on March 14 and 15.—JAG, Jr.
