Mangaldan bikefest lures cycling superstars

THE annual Mangaldan bikefest scheduled this year on March 1 has lured national cycling celebrities.

And unlike the usual flat trek, this year’s event will traverse the mountains of Baguio City.

More than 60 cyclists are expected to compete with superstars led by four former Tour champions Arnel Quirimit, Santy Barnachea, Victor Espiritu, Warren Davadilla and defending champion Reynaldo Navarro plus.

Dubbed as “XVIWerweran ed Mangaldan Mountain Challenge,” the one-day bikefest will start and finish in front of the town’s municipal hall, passing the municipalities of San Jacinto, Manaoag, Laoac, Binalonan, Pozorrubio, and Sison, then up to Kennon Road, Baguio City, back down to Tuba, Benguet via Marcos Highway, Pugo, Rosario and Damortis in La Union, San Fabian then to Mangaldan with an approximate distance of 142 kilometers.

The bikefest, founded in 1974 and now on its 35th edition, is backed by LTO chief Arturo Lomibao, NCRPO chief Gen. Leopoldo Bataoil, Engrs. Rosendo So, Rodolfo Dion, Joey Aquino, John Garcia, Guam-based Felipe Movida Jr., Houston resident Blandino Caguioa and Abraham Yu.

P80,000 in cash, trophies and medals bankrolled by Emperador Distillers, Inc. are up for grabs.

The pedal-by-pedal account will be aired live over DZRD Sonshine Radio at 981 Khz AM.–JAG Jr.
