Ilocos Norte poised to retain IRAA title
ILOCOS Norte remains the team to beat in the Ilocos Region Athletic Association (IRAA) Meet which reels off today, February 22, until February 27, in Dagupan City with some 6,000 athletes participating.
Ilocos Norte (whose governor is Michael Keon, the former project director of the famed Gintong Alay, a training program in sports during the Marcos era) was the overall champion last year, gathering the most number of victories both in the elementary and secondary divisions.
Nonetheless, Pangasinan I Schools Superintendent Alma Ruby Torio said the province’s athletes will still aim to wrest the title from the defending champions.
Other teams from the province are Pangasinan Division II, Alaminos City, San Carlos City, Urdaneta City, and Dagupan City.
However, Dagupan City Schools Superintendent Aurora Domingo concedes that their team is not yet capable of winning the IRAA crown.
In last year’s IRAAmeet, Dagupan finished in sixth place from a pool of 13 teams.
The other delegations are from La Union, San Fernando City, Ilocos Sur, Candon City, Vigan and Laoag.—LM
