CALASIAO–The Region 1 office of the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) is on a campaign against unauthorized cash register machines as part of efforts to improve the government’s tax collection.

Under the campaign dubbed ‘Oplan Silip’, the regional office based here will check on businesses in the Ilocos provinces that use cash registers that are not registered and approved by the BIR for issuance of official receipts.

Tomas Rosales, BIR regional director, told The PUNCH that his office has already started the initial phase of the project in the provinces of Pangasinan, La Union, Ilocos Sur and Ilocos Norte.

The BIR started by checking compliance by business establishments, then confiscated unauthorized machines and fining the business owners P25,000 to P75,000.

Rosales said grave offenses could be penalized with closure of the business.

An authorized cash register machine must have a BIR permit sticker displayed visibly to the customers.#
