Barba gets tough vs. cattle rustlers

SAN CARLOS CITY– Will a different kind of “love letter” do the trick?
Senior Superintendent Percival Barba, the police provincial director, is taking an unusual and different tack to stop cattle rustling in the city.
Barba wants to send word, literally, a personal letter directly to known cattle rustlers residing in Barangay Balite Sur here, known as a haven for farm animal thieves, warning them of dire consequences should they refuse to desist from pursuing their illegal activities.
Barba said he is sending his letters to some 40 known cattle rustlers in the area and these will be hand-delivered by the barangay officials.
His “do-or-else letters” invite the suspected castle rustlers to meet with him and promise to disengage from their illegal operations or “be ready to suffer the consequences”.
“I will not force them to stop. But what’s most important is I have delivered my message,” Barba said.
Barba met with the barangay officials and residents last week to discuss the unabated rustling and his plan, and to secure the community’s commitment to help address the problem.
“They better shapeup or ship out,” Barba told The PUNCH.
Cattle rustlers, who have been victimizing poor farmers in the area and in neighboring barangays and towns, reportedly operate a slaughterhouse in the barangay.
Barangay residents, however, refused to testify on the suspects’ activities for fear of reprisal. He reiterated Mayor Julier Resuello’s offer to help provide alternative livelihood projects in the area.
Barba plans to send letters next to known protectors of the syndicate. #
