AUSTRALIAN soldiers who saw action in the Philippines during the Second World War have been given a special spot at the Lingayen Veterans’ Memorial Park with a commemorative plaque that was unveiled on February 20.

The Australian soldiers were deployed in 15 Navy and supply ships that landed at the Lingayen Gulf for he liberation of the Luzon island from Japanese forces.

Lt. Col Gary Barnes, Assistant Defense Attaché of the Australian Embassy in Manila, thanked Governor Amado Espino Jr. for the recognition and the celebration that was attended by visiting Royal Australian Navy veterans and their wives.

Barnes said assisting in organizing the occasion has given him a chance to learn more about the battle at the Lingayen Gulf in 1945 and the role played by his compatriots.

The inscription of the bronze plaque reads: In memory of those who lost their lives at Lingayen Gulf, Philippines, 1944-45. This plaque is dedicated to all servicemen and civilians who fought bravely against the Imperial Japanese Forces.

Last year, Espino institutionalized the celebration of the Lingayen Gulf Landings on January 9, marking it as Veterans’ Day and making it a public holiday in the province.#
