URDANETA CITY–The leading city in the Ilocos region in terms of income and assets, now also wants to be a pioneer in waste management in the country.

Mayor Amadeo Perez Jr. said a Japanese company has offered to invest and help develop the city’s existing sanitary landfill into one that can produce methane gas to generate power for homes and factories.

Perez said the company, which he declined to name at this time, intends to invest about $10 to $12 million to convert the existing sanitary landfill into a Class “A” facility for fuel production.

This methane-producing sanitary landfill will be the first of its kind to be developed in the country using foreign investment.

Technical experts from the company have conducted an initial site inspection last year and are now drafting the blueprint for the proposed project.

Perez said he’s now waiting for the company’s go-signal before the city government proceeds to acquire an additional five to six hectares of land adjacent the existing sanitary landfill.

The facility currently covers eight hectares. The proposed project will require at least 14 to 15 hectares of sanitary landfill in order to produce methane gas of commercial quantity out of bio-degradable wastes coming from the homes.

Perez said the city government and the Japanese group are eager to start the project, adding that “the facility is badly needed by the booming city”.—LM
