STA. BARBARA–Paul Wrenn, a celebrated American powerlifter, showed his legendary form when he visited schools here as part of the local government’s anti-drug abuse campaign.

Wrenn, 61, himself an anti-illegal drugs advocate and a member of AAUDrug Free Federation, still holds the 19th best record on the super heavyweight all-time rankings for his 855 pound deadlift in 1976. The October 2008 issue of Powerlifting USA ranked Wrenn the sixth best super heavyweight of all-time.

Superintendent Eric Noble, the town police chief, said Wrenn encouraged the students to take care of their bodies, stay away from vices like cigarette smoking, drinking liquor and illegal drugs, and put God first in their lives.

Wrenn, who was invited by the Pastors and Teachers Ministerial Association of Sta. Barbara, visited Matic-matic National High School, Tuliao National High School and Daniel Maramba National High School .

Noble said the campaign against illegal drugs and the program to promote youth empowerment is under the 10-point progress agenda of Mayor Reynaldo Velasco, a retired police general.

“This activity is the software in our quest for quality education for our young people. While we upgrade the hardware, that is building more classrooms and improving facilities, we also put emphasis on the software, the moral values of the students to stay away from illegal drugs and gangsteerism,” Velasco said.#
