Celebrating Independence Day with visual arts, music

MEMBERS of the Dagupan Artists Circle (DAC) gathered at the center road island of the newly-opened Dawel-Pantal-Lucao road on June 9 to demonstrate their sense of patriotism and nationalism through visual arts using a unique medium in line with the celebration of Independence Day.

Two artists, Boni de Guzman and Patrick Fernandez, painted the image of the Philippine flag not on canvas or paper but on faces of models Kat and Kathy Fabia and Keeks Fernandez.

Ed Sevilleja, vice president of the DAC, told The PUNCH that the face painting activity was the group’s idea of portraying their sense of patriotism.

“This is to display the Philippine flag in different way,” Sevilleja said, adding that “as artists, we share the task of promoting nationalism and patriotism.”

Fernandez said that painting on human face is just as good as painting on canvass.

BINMALEY
HYMN

Meanwhile in the 360-year old Binmaley, the town’s first ever official hymn was played in public for the first time as the highlight of the town’s Independence Day celebration.

The hymn, composed by Geri Domingo with lyrics by Fr. Immanuel Escano, was sung by the municipal choir, local officials and department heads.

Entitled “O Binmaley” written in Pangasinan, the hymn speaks of Binmaleyans’ love for their town and thanksgiving to God for the natural resources that abound in this coastal town.

Mayor Simplicio Rosario said he is set to issue an executive order to all public and private entities to sing the town’s hymn after the singing of the national anthem during flag raising ceremonies and on special occasions.

The municipal choir, assisted by the University of Luzon Choral Group, has recorded the song and Rosario has distributed copies of the CD to overseas Binmaleyans as he expressed hope that they too will be singing the town’s hymn during special events or gatherings of Binmaleyans. -CSR
