DEFENDING PRISAA champion University of Luzon showed the shape of things to come in the coming collegiate basketball season by beating 2007 National Inter-Collegiate champion Angeles University Foundation, 64-59, in a friendship game last Wednesday at the Don Alipio Fernandez Sr. People’s Astrodome.

AUF started like the proverbial house on fire by racing to an 11-point lead early in the first quarter at 17.6 on rallies by Mark Garney and Jess Henson.

At this juncture, Golden Tigers coach Rene ‘Jackal’ Vidal sued for time-out to stop the Great Danes’ onslaught.

Then New Golden Tigers’ acquisition Jonathan Panunciar, Norman Ilao, Marbin Macalalad and Claude Cubo conspired with bullstrong Jenkins Bucao for an 18-6 run to cease a hair-line lead at the end of the first quarter at 24-234.

In the second quarter, high-leaping Willy Caiña presided over the UL:’s attack along with court general Martin Callao to erect an eight-point lead but the Great Danes, on efforts by Garney and Inzal kept AUF in the thick of the fight at the end of the second quarter, 31-34.

The third quarter proceeded with a nip and tuck battle but UL still managed to keep a one-point lead at 49-48.

In the pay-off period, vastly improved Jenkins Bucao, Caiña and Macalalad stepped on the gas for UL but AUF held on to the Tigers’ tail.

But costly turn-overs by the Great Danes proved to be the deciding factor which the Perez-Boulevard-based cagers of Councilor Chito Samson took advantage of to finish the game at 64-59.

Martin topscored for UL with 16 points while Bucao and Cubo made 11 points apiece and Caiña, Panunciar and Macalalad chipped in nine points each.

Garney leads AUF’s cause with 13 points while Henson and Inzal had 12 points.

In the second game, Lyceum Northwestern University beat Cordillera Career Dev’t College.

Region 1 MNCAA Director Seato Gonimil coordinated the Friendship Games.
