Georgina “Gina” de Venecia, wife of House Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr., will now focus her attention on her husband’s re-election campaign after failing to make it to the list of the administration’s senatorial slate.

De Venecia, in a telephone interview with The PUNCH, said she does not feel aggrieved for not being included in the ruling party’s 12 official senatorial candidates saying, “This is really God’s will that I have to stay beside my husband in the coming elections.”

The speaker, president of the ruling Lakas-CMD-UMDP coalition, has publicly made known his disapproval of his wife’s possible bid for a senatorial seat.

Mrs. De Venecia, however, said she is not completely giving up her plan to become an elected official and will likely attempt to pursue it in 2010.

She has, on her own, been actively undertaking humanitarian initiatives, one of the most prominent of which has been the establishment of The Haven, a halfway home for abused children and women in various parts of the country.—EVA
