STA. BARBARA—Vowing to the clamor of local leaders and majority of the people to lead a principled politics of change and reform in his native town, retired Police Deputy Director General Reynaldo V. Velasco has formally announced his bid for mayor instead of his initial plan to run for Congress.

“While I initially planned to run for Congress, the lack of material time to campaign and cover close to 300 barangays in the third district will be humanly impossible to interface and interact with the people. I also factored the advice of my friends and supporters to instead run for mayor to bring about meaningful change and progress in Sta. Barbara,” Velasco said.

Asked whether it was a demotion on his part to run for mayor on account of his rank as a retired three-star police general, Velasco stressed that “in public service, there is no such thing as rank or position, for in essence to be in public service is to be a servant of the people.”

He cited the wisdom of Jose Rizal not to forget one’s humble roots as well as the example set by former Press and Agrarian Reform Secretary Hernani A. Braganza who chose to serve as city mayor of Alaminos City.

He joined the PMA in 1967 and was in the military service for 38 years.
