MORE than 74-percent of Rice Farmer Financial Assistance (RFFA) beneficiaries in Region I received their P5,000 cash assistance.

Vida Cacal, information officer of the Department of Agriculture (DA) Region I, said 173,850 of 234,865 registered farmers have already received their cash aid.

Beneficiaries were 98,812 from Pangasinan, 39,495 from La Union, 46,705 from Ilocos Sur, and 49,853 from Ilocos Norte.

The financial assistance is disbursed to help lessen the adverse effects of El Niño phenomenon and the rising production costs of agricultural materials and fertilizers.

Cacal said qualified rice farmer beneficiaries are those farming or owning less than two hectares of farmlands registered in the Registry System for the Basic Sectors of Agriculture.

Meanwhile, Cacal said that 36 hectares of farmlands in Barangay Evangelista in Tayug town have been reported to contain damaged rice crops due to dry spell caused by the El Niño phenomenon.

Analysis on the crops reveal it can no longer be recovered.

Despite the town’s distance to the San Roque Dam, the flow of water to the barangay has been reduced, causing the crops to die.

Farmers now ask for corn seeds from the DA to recoup their losses. (Ahikam Pasion)
