Farmers in Mangaldan suffer from lack of water

FARMERS in 22 barangays of Mangaldan are beginning to be alarmed as they continue to experience water shortage in their farms.

The Municipal Agriculture Office (MAO) said most affected barangays include Bantayan, Talogtog, Salay, Maasin, Bateng, Lanas, Macayug, Inlambo, Embarcadero, Nibaliw, and Tebag.

MAO officer Merley Sali said the listed barangays do not have an irrigation canal from NIA.

Isidro Soriano, a farmer in the town, said he has invested more than one hundred thousand pesos, but the El Niño phenomenon could blow it all away, leaving no chance for profits or to break even.

Despite the distance to the Angalacan River, canals have a higher elevation than the current water supply, which cuts off the connection.

Other farmers irrigators associations have water pumps on standby in case water supply gets harder to come by in the following days.

Meanwhile, the Department of Agriculture (DA) is ready to provide certified seeds to farmers, which require less water than normal seeds. (Ahikam Pasion)
