TO IMPACT ON SAND AND GRAVEL MINING OPERATIONS

THE Mines and GeoSciences Bureau (MGB) Region I warns of possible slow down in the deposition of sediment deposits in the province, as an effect of the ongoing El Niño.

In a press conference Monday, November 6, MGB Region I Division Chief Vilma Viceno said the El Niño phenomenon will slow down the downward transportation of sediments, particularly sand and gravel.

Pangasinan, according to PAGASA forecast, will experience months-long drought due to El Niño, a situation that will bring below normal rainfall conditions, with rains to occur with less than 40-percent probability.

It means that less rains will be expected and if it rains, less rainfall will be logged and will result in sediment deposition being compromised, said Viceno.

She projected that once sediment deposition slows down, infrastructure projects of the government may be adversely affected.

In region I alone, the MGB said the workers of 254 licensed operators of sand and gravel mining, and with expected impact on quarrying operations, more than 5,000 workers may also be affected. (Ahikam Pasion)
