More solar power plants to rise in Pangasinan

PANGASINAN is witnessing a significant increase in sustainable power generation as more entrepreneurs invest in solar power projects across the province.

The Sangguniang Panlalawigan has approved four resolutions this year expressing no objections to solar power projects in the province. The most recent approval was granted to 3 Barracuda Energy Corp. on Monday, September  25.

In an interview, Vice Governor Mark Lambino, who presides over the legislative council, revealed that most of these projects are located in the second district, covering areas like Bugallon, Aguilar, and Mangatarem. An additional project was given the green light in Sual town, with two more in San Manuel.

The projects in Mangatarem, led by the Aboitiz group, are expected to generate 260 to 300 megawatts, while Sual’s project aims to produce 70MW, and San Manuel will see the implementation of two 60MW projects. These projects are being spearheaded by proponents that have already secured the necessary documentation, including Solar Energy Operating Contracts from the Department of Energy, compliance with environmental regulations, and land acquisition or agreements.

Lambino expects these solar power projects to become operational within the next two to three years, potentially contributing around 1.5 gigawatts to the province’s power generation capacity. He emphasized that the provincial government ‘exercises great care in approving such projects, ensuring that proponents have the capacity to build and manage them responsibly.’

The vice governor also clarified that solar power projects might not necessarily lead to lower electricity prices for consumers due to existing national regulations governing power utilities. However, proponents can offer non-power-related incentives to host local government units, such as local taxes, employment opportunities for residents, and corporate social responsibility programs.
