THE Ilocos Region is fourth biggest palay producer in the country and Pangasinan is its top contributor with more than 1.2 million metric tons (MT).

This was bared in the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) – Regional Statistics Services Office 1’s report released on Tuesday, May 30 via its recently-held Agricultural Statistics and Labor Force survey Results Data Dissemination.

The data has recorded a 9.95-percent share of the region in palay production throughout the entire country, equivalent to 1.97 million MT of palay yield this 2022.

Pangasinan led the production, followed by La Union. Both provinces also recorded an uptick in palay production compared to last year.

Pangasinan recorded a 4.84-percent yield increase. In 2021, the province recorded 1,162,636 MT, and 1,218,933 MT in  2022.

La Union recorded 8.48-percent increase in palay yield from 2021 with 157,881 MT, to 2022 with 171,276 MT.

Jin Pulmano of Department of Agriculture Region I said while palay production went up, production of other commodities in the region decreased as farmers shifted to other crops that are seeing higher demand.  (Ahikam Pasion)
