Mangaldan keen on owning Triple A abattoir

DON’T look now but Class AAA abattoir will soon be established in Mangaldan.

The town’s local government has begun doing its own benchmarking and study tours in well-known Class AAA accredited slaughterhouses in the country from which it can pattern best practices.

Among the Class AAA accredited abattoirs are the Tarlac Meatmasters of the Pilmico Animal Nutrition Corporation in Bamban town, and the Red Dragon Farm Feed, Livestock, and Foods Inc. in Pampanga province.

The town is set to file its application for financial grant by the Philippine Rural Development Project through the Department of Agriculture for the planned reconstruction and improvement of the municipal abattoir – eventually being raised to Class AAA.

Dr. Orlando Ongsotto, Regional Director for the National Meat Inspection Service (NMIS) Ilocos Region, said that until now, there is no accredited Class AAA abattoir in the country owned or controlled by the state, and Mangaldan may be the very first in the country.

All abattoirs with said accreditation are privately-owned.

In an interview, Mangaldan Mayor Bonafe de Vera-Parayno said she is confident Mangaldan will earn the honor of being the first government-owned Class AAA accredited abattoir in the country.

Meanwhile, Ongsotto warned abattoir operators against violating NMIS regulations in slaughtering animals.

One common violation is hydrating animal meats by injecting liquid to increase weight.

Itong mga ‘flooded’ na karne ay may mataas na posibilidad ng pagkasira na nagdudulot ng potensyal na panganib sa kalusugan ng mga mamimili,” said Ongsotto.

Violators will be charged for violation of the Animal Welfare Act of the Philippines, Meat Inspection Code of the Philippines, the Consumer Act of the Philippines and the

regulations listed in the DA Administrative Order No. 15 series of 2006.  (Ahikam Pasion)
