Rotating brownouts expected beginning October

By October 2, 2022Business

PANGASINAN can expect to experience rotating brownouts during the last quarter of 2022 after the Department of Energy (DOE) warned the Luzon grid that it may not be able to meet its contingency reserves.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, September 29, the DOE said Luzon is in danger of not meeting the required contingency reserves beginning the month of October.

The contingency reserve refers to the ‘reserve’ or backup supply of power that will be used to replace losses by generating units.

For example, if the Sual coal fired power plant fails to produce its required power output due to maintenance or problems, the contingency reserve will be used to fill that production gap.

This was not the first time that the Luzon grid met a lack in contingency reserves. Last August, the DOE also reported a similar power outlook.

This will mean that the Yellow or Red alerts will be raised once power supply goes down, especially during peak hours.

Once red alert has been issued, expect rotating brownouts. (Ahikam Pasion)
