Eggs, pan de sal prices are up!

By July 17, 2022Business

FANS of the classic Pinoy breakfast pan de sal and eggs are beginning to worry.

This, after many bakeries in the province, including Dagupan City, have either increased their retail prices  of pan de sal, or have begun making smaller “bite-sized” versions of it.

Bread producers are already selling pan de sal price starting from four pesos, depending on the bakery.

“Mahal na po yung harina tapos asukal, pati yung gas na ginagamit namin sa panaderya nagtaas,” said Larry, a baker.

On the average, flour prices in Pangasinan have increased by at least two pesos per kilogram.

Aling Norma, a regular Malimgas Market customer, said a kilogram of flour used to sell at P35, but has since increased to PHP37 to PHP40.

Ric Pinca, executive director of the Philippine Association of Flour Millers Inc. (PAFMIL), said a metric ton of flour now costs USD600, compared to 2021 with half its price.

Wheat, a primary component of flour production, has become scarce since the armed conflict between Ukraine and Russia began. Both countries are major wheat exporters, with Russia contributing 13.1% of wheat exports last 2021, with Ukraine following suit at 8.5%.

Meanwhile, egg prices in the province have also risen.

Markets in Dagupan City and neighboring towns have had a two to four peso average increase.

Agricultural Sector Alliance of the Philippines Inc. (AGAP) partylist Representative Nicanor Briones warned egg prices could increase up to P15 apiece in the following weeks due to the threat of bird flu and high production costs. (Ahikam Pasion)
