Remove fuel excise tax – Autopro

JEEPNEY drivers and operators in Pangasinan are demanding the removal of fuel excise tax in lieu of planned subsidies from the Department of Transportation.

Bernard Tuliao, president of the Alliance of United Transport Organization Provincewide (AUTOPRO)– Pangasinan, said the P5,000 subsidy grant is not enough to cover their expenses and would only help for only a week or less.

He said the lifting of the excise tax on fuels will result in P6 to P10 reduction in fuel pump price.

He said R.A. 10963 (Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion or TRAIN) law raised the excise tax on petroleum products in three tranches from 2018 to 2020, increasing duties to P10 per liter of gasoline, P6 per liter for diesel, and P5 per liter of kerosene.

The Department of Finance, however, said the suspension of the excise tax will not bode well for the government, because that would result in P131 billion in lost revenues.

Tuliao, whose group ‘s petition to the regional office of the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) last month was denied, said he is optimistic that the petition will not be ignored if more transport groups join the petition.

Meanwhile, Tuliao is urging fellow drivers not to overcharge their passengers amid reports of some drivers charging double the usual pre-pandemic rate.

He urged the commuters to help them identify ‘daylight robbers’ by identifying he plate numbers and area traveled and send it to AUTOPRO or to the LTFRB Facebook page. (Ahikam Pasion)
