Transpo group eyes P2 increase in jeepney fare

MEMBERS of the transport group Alliance of United Transport Organization Provincewide (AUTOPRO) – Pangasinan are set to meet this week to finalize their petition for a two-peso increase in jeepney minimum fare.

Bernard Tuliao, AUTOPRO-Pangasinan president, said the two-peso fare hike petition to the Land Transportation Franchising Regulatory Board (LTFRB) has been pending for the past three year.

“We asked for this 2018, but it was not granted,” said Tuliao.

He said the fare hike petition is now timely since jeepney drivers and operators are compelled to keep the 50% capacity of passengers imposed by the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) to prevent the spread of Covid-19 among commuters.

This, plus the continuous rise in petroleum products makes it difficult for drivers to earn a living.

“We need this to survive in our livelihood,” he said.

Tuliao also pointed out that the assistance given by the Department of Transportation is not enough, and worse, it was suspended indefinitely.

But his group is willing to withdraw their petition if oil prices go down to a manageable price in the weeks ahead. (Ahikam Pasion)
