State of calamity declared in 66 barangays

INVASION OF ARMY WORMS IN BAYAMBANG

THE municipal council of Bayambang has passed a resolution declaring a state of calamity in 66 barangays due to damages left by army worms infestation on onion farms.

Sangguniang Bayan Resolution No. 53, series of 2021 was passed on Feb. 3 based on recommendation of the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office and the Municipal Agriculture Office.

The resolution identified 1,478.247 hectares planted to onions that had been infested and affected the livelihood of about 1,484 farmers.

The area represents 99 percent of the total areas planted to onions affected by army worms attack.

Following the passage of the resolution, the local government and the affected barangays have been authorized to use their calamity fund.

Army worms breed in grassy patches near the farms with every female worm laying about up to 1,500 eggs during its lifetime resulting in the hatching of millions of worms if left unchecked. (Eva Visperas)
