THE town of Mangatarem registered its first COVID-19 case on June 11 when a 26-year-old Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) from Barangay Arellano was found positive of the coronavirus during a medical checkup, a requirement for his return to work abroad.

Mayor Ramil Ventinilla, in his message on YouTube, said the 26-year-old COVID-19 positive is a seaman who arrived from work abroad last March and was already set to return to his work last June 14 but was not allowed to leave because of his condition.

Ventinilla told residents of Mangatarem not to worry because the 26-year-old father of two is now confined at the Philippine Arena, a facility in Bulacan.

The man travelled to Manila on May 26 to work on his documents where he was made to undergo a Rapid Test initially.

It was on June 11 when RT PCR confirmatory results of the swab test he took on June 9 showed he was positive for COVID-19.

Mayor Ventinilla said the wife, two children, a brother-in-law and parents of the 26-year-old seaman were also made to undergo swab tests for more conclusive RT PCR results.

He advised the family of the OFW to quarantine themselves at home and the local government would provide for their needs.

The mayor said the 31 other persons in Mangatarem who the patient had a contact in the town also turned negative in Rapid Tests conducted on them

The mayor also announced that the male person under investigation (PUI) from Manila who visited his girlfriend in Barangay Cabayugan, Mangatarem tested negative in his RT-PCR confirmatory test.

The other PUI from Mangatarem also tested negative of COVID-19 in his own RT-PCR test but remains confined at the Region 1 Medical Center in Dagupan City. (Leonardo Micua)
