BFAR to quarantine ‘Dagupan Golden Bangus‘

A golden bangus, a rarity in this national fish among Filipinos, will be quarantined for survival once it arrives at the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) in Barangay Bonuan Binloc in Dagupan City.

Westly Rosario, chief of the BFAR center in the city, said strict protocols will be adopted to protect it against visitor. “It will be quarantined, placed in a secure place, away from people so that it will not be disturbed,” he said.

He said  ‘golden bangus’ that BFAR tried to raise eight years ago from a fishpond in Barangay Linoc, Binmaley eventually died due to stress created by commotion  from media that kept taking pictures.

They noticed that the golden bangus started to distance itself from other “normal” bangus in the same reservoir.

“Eventually, it refused to eat and died, he added.

He said golden bangus is rare and not easily found anywhere in the country, except in Pangasinan.

Rosario said he saw a golden bangus in Taiwan, when he had a project with the World Fish Center and the Taiwanese refused to reveal how the specie came about.

The second golden bangus expected at the BFAR is about one year old and weighing less than one kilogram, was found in a fishpond owned by Rommel Felomino in Barangay Carael in Dagupan City.  It’s still unclear how the golden bangus got into the fishpond of Filomeno.

It will be officially known as ‘Dagupan Golden Bangus”.

He said Filomeno contacted him “so that it can be properly taken cared of for research and experiment purposes” and both agreed to transfer the golden bangus to BFAR when the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) situation in Dagupan improves.

The golden bangus is also considered as a lucky charm by some people, Rosario said smiling. (PhilStar Wire Service/ECV)
