Jeepney driver commits suicide due to lockdown

A jeepney driver who was worried about his family’s upkeep because of the lockdown was found hanging dead on May 18 in Barangay San Aurelio 1st, Balungao.

Modesto Casil, 63, was found by his son and namesake Modesto Jr, 39, hanging on an ipil-ipil tree with an electrical wire tied around his neck, at a vacant lot at the back of their house.

The victim’s wife, Violeta , 61, said her husband started having financial problems since the start of the lockdown as he could no longer drive a passenger jeepney, that he could not earn for his family the whole time.

She said she believed it was the reason her husband committed suicide.

P/Chief Master Sergeant Andres Vendiola said in a phone interview that the couple has three children who are all jobless.

Before the incident, Modesto felt sad that he had to lend his brother money to pay for his electric bill of his brother, his wife told investigators. She assured him that the money would be returned soon on sensing he was regretting lending the money.

She said Modesto replied: ‘I might not be able to wait for that anymore.” (PhilStar Wire Service/ECV)
