Police officer helped woman give birth inside tricycle

NEVER underestimate what a police officer or a fireman can do in any form of emergency, even assisting in child birth.

Such was the emergency for an expectant mother who was rushing to give birth at the rural health unit in Natividad only to find herself already in labor inside the tricycle.

P/Captain Ramil Mendioro, police chief of Natividad Police Station, said the mother, Elgie Lumiran, was fortunate to be in an area where the station’s police officers were conducting a feeding program at a Day Care center in Barangay Salud in Natividad.

Recounting the events, Lumiran, from Barangay San Maximo, was rushing on a tricycle to get to the town’s lying-in clinic about 4 kilometers away, which was still closed at the time, so she decided to be brought to a nearby hospital.

The stress and the bumpy tricycle ride were enough to trigger her labor.

“It so happened that we were having a feeding program when concerned citizens approached us and told that a woman was about to give birth inside a tricycle”, said Mendioro.

P/Master Sergeant Ching Ling Salguet and P/Corporal Joanna Marie Badua who were overseeing the feeding activity rushed to the location of the tricycle and immediately assisted Lumaran to deliver her baby.

Badua, according to Mendioro, is BS Nursing graduate which proved invaluable to her being a police officer.

“She’s had a number of experiences in assisting birthing moms because of her college study,” said Mendioro.
