SP probes BFPs policy on ‘instant sprinklers’

THE Sangguniang Panlungsod is set to hold a question hour this week to look into the reported required installation of instant fire sprinklers from schools and big establishments by the Bureau of Fire Protection before a mayor’s permit can be issued.

Councilor Jose Netu Tamayo raised the issue last week after learning from owners of private schools, hospitals, and other big establishments that they are being required to install the instant sprinklers by the local BFP with the specification that installation must be done by BFP personnel or its authorized contractor.

The instant sprinkler is triggered instantly in case of fire and required by the BFP to be installed in private schools, hospitals and other big establishments.

Tamayo said building owners are not objecting to the requirement but questions the policy imposed that personnel of BFP or its contractor be used for the installation work.

Councilor Luis Samson Jr., an official of the University of Luzon, confirmed that before schools in the city can renew their mayor’s permit, they are required to comply with local BFP’s requirement and policy.

Believing that the policy requiring installation by BFP personnel or its contractor is irregular. Tamayo asked that city fire marshal and representatives of private schools and hospitals to be invited this week’s regular session to shed light on the issue. (Leonardo Micua)
