AFTER being postponed twice due to the CoViD-2019 scare, the 2020 Regional Athletic Association (R1AA) meet will finally be staged by the Pangasinan provincial government and the Pangasinan School 1 division. on April 10 to 20.

Dr. Edilberto Abalos, DepEd chief of the education service division, said the new schedule was finalized in a meeting among DepEd regional officials led by Officer-in-Charge Tolentino Aquino who earlier talked with Governor Amado Espino III relative to the new schedule.

The original schedule was February 19 to 26 but because of the memorandum of the Department of Health, Department of the Interior and Local Government and the central office of DepEd, the meet had to be postponed to March 31 to April 7 in a bid to protect the health of learners and school officials converging in Lingayen for the weeklong sports event.

This had to be postponed anew on order of Governor Espino III on February 13   postponing all events and temporarily closing all public facilities in Pangasinan in compliance with the joint memorandum of DOH and DILG on February 7, 2010 that called for the postponement of concerts and public events.

Exceptions are Pangasinan Day on April 5 and the May 1 Pista’y Dayat but without the usual preliminary crowd-drawing activities seen in the past.

Meanwhile, the DOH, DILG and the Department of Tourism issued a joint statement on February 18 assuring everyone that “it is safe to organize and attend public gatherings, meetings and festivals as long as all precautionary measures identified by the DOH are observed”.

These include the washing of hands regularly and for one to seek medical attention if signs of coughs, colds, sore throat and fever appear.

DepEd Secretary Leonor Briones also issued DepEd Memo No. 023, Series of 2020 that recommended regional offices, school division offices and schools may resume the conduct of national, regional and/or off-campus activities starting February 24, 2010, provided all precautionary measures are strictly followed.

More than 10,000 athletes and coaches from 14 school divisions in Region 1 are converging in Lingayen for the weeklong regional meet.

The Dagupan School Division is the current R1AA back-to-back champion, winning the title in 2018 and 2019. (Leonardo Micua)
