SEVEN hundred forty nine unlicensed firearms have been surrendered by their gun owners to the Pangasinan PNP in response to its Oplan Katok.

According to Police Colonel Redrico Maranan, police provincial director, Oplan Katok serves search warrants to check on location and status of their firearms previously licensed and voluntarily surrendered by gun owners.

If gun owners are unable to renew the licenses of their firearms, they are asked to surrender these to the PNP /and can claim these back when documents are completed for their renewal.

The surrendered guns include 114 high powered firearms (carbines, M16s and shotguns) while 563 are pistols and revolvers (cal. 38, cal. 22 and cal. 45).

Police Region 1 Director Joel Orduña said the hundreds of firearms in custody were the result of a strong campaign against loose firearms to prevent the use of these firearms in crimes.

According to Maranan, the PNP is monitoring the loose firearms through the reports they received from tipsters and others who failed to renew their licenses, which is the subject of the PNP’s crackdown.

The owner of a firearms is normally given a one-year extension to renew the license but if it exceeds one year of expiry, the gun becomes the subject of a search warrant operation, Maranan said. (Nora Dominguez)
