A 27-year old man in Dagupan City was arrested by the National Bureau of Investigation – Dagupan District Office (NBI-DADO), and charged for raping his live-in partner’s minor daughter.

Lawyer Rizaldy Jaymalin, NBI-DADO chief in an interview Tuesday, said that the suspect ‘Jerick’ (real name withheld), was arrested through an entrapment operation in a barangay in the city last Monday.

He said the victim ‘Rose’ (real name withheld), 12 year-old, was accompanied by her relatives to the NBI office to file complaint against ‘Jerick’, who allegedly raped and abused her on many occasions since May 2018.

‘Rose’ reportedly tried telling her mother, who is an Overseas Filipino Worker, about the situation. The daughter’s pleadings were ignored.

This prompted ‘Rose’ to approach his relatives, who accompanied her to the NBI-DADO.

When ‘Jerick’ called the victim, to come to his house, the NBI-DADO conducted an entrapment that resulted in the suspect’s arrest on Oct.7.

“Several charges of statutory rape will be filed against the suspect,” said Jaymalin, citing that once proven guilty, he could be imprisoned for a lifetime – as statutory rape has no bail, and each count would be met with reclusion perpetua (a prison term of at least 30 years plus additional penalties).

Meanwhile, Jaymalin urged parents to take extra caution in entrusting their children to other people.

“We should leave our children to those who we know care for them. If possible we should not leave them to other people,” he said.

The victim is set to undergo a series of counselling in order to relieve her of trauma. (Helen Martin)
