SOME 150 barangay officials in Dagupan, including tanods joined a basic self-defense seminar arranged by the office of Fourth District Rep. Christopher de Venecia at the West Central Elementary School on October 15.

“Kalasag: Basic Defense” seminar, was conducted by Lakan Ronny Royce Basi, founder of Laraw Kali Pamuok, a truly Filipino martial arts system used by the early Filipino ancestors.

De Venecia said the Filipino martial arts was shared with the barangay official to instill in them some discipline and to effectively discharge their duties in protecting their constituents.

The participants were taught self-defense that focuses on pamuok (open hand to hand combat), panuntukan (Filipino dirty boxing), lumo (wrestling) and other fighting forms that also focus on use of arnis, knife, and other basic self-defense techniques.

It was learned that self-defense fighting techniques dated back before the Philippines was colonized by Spain.

De Venecia was joined by Mayor Brian Lim during the culminating program, preceded by the live demonstration of Laraw Kali Pamuok fighting form.

Lakan Basi was joined by his three training staff composed of Arlyn Santiago, Rommel Balauro and Em Segade.

The seminar is also set to be conducted in Mangaldan, San Fabian, Jacinto and Manaoag. (Leonardo Micua)
