Sulit assures SP: It’s peaceful in the city

DAGUPAN Police Chief, P/Superintendent Jandale Sulit, assured members of the Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) on Sept. 2 that despite the three murder crimes that rocked the city, “Dagupan remains generally peaceful”.

Sulit said of the three cases, two were solved in less than 24 hours while investigation of the the slaying of ex-kagawad Johnny Baniqued, 47, a realtor; Oscar Fernandez, a professor of UL; and the wounding of one Peter Ramos, is still ongoing.

He said the rape-homicide case of 21-year old Reisha Vidal, promodizer at the CSI the City Mall. Four suspects were arrested and charged before the City Prosecutors Office while the identity of the perpetrator behind the stabbing of Jerick Fontanilla, a student of the University of Luzon on Arellano Street, has been established and the surrender of one of his accomplices is expected.

He added despite the filing of cases against the four suspects, they are still continuing their investigation in order to gather more damning evidences against the four perpetrators arrested.

Sulilt said the absence of witnesses and unclear CCTV footage have made identification of the gunman difficult.

He said the police seek the cooperation of the families of the victims are important to the case.

He cited the cooperation of the community in the past that led to the early solution of cases.

“We are not hiding any incident in Dagupan, any one can go to the police station and open the blotter and see our records, “said Sulit as he slammed certain Facebook posts insinuating that there is a breakdown of peace and order in the city.

Police records show that crimes from January 1 this year to date recorded only 190 cases. Of these, 71 cases had already been solved. 40 cases had been cleared or those cases whose suspects had been identified and the cases against these perpetrators had been filed while the remaining cases are still being investigated.

In the campaign against illegal drugs, 59 operations were conducted and 73 persons were arrested and charged.

He reported that as of December 31, 2017, all 31 barangays of Dagupan had been drug cleared. They will be processed anew this year.

Meanwhile, Sulit told the SP his opposition to the Plea Bargaining agreement on drug cases as directed by Supreme Court because the drug suspects would simply plead guilty for a reduced sentence of four years instead of reclusion perpetua.

Sulit said a gun-for-hire group from Dagupan was arrested and its members are now behind bars. These are members of the Padilla gun-for-hire group who were arrested in Tanay, Rizal who are now detained at the BJMP District Jail in Dagupan.

Sulit was applauded by the SP when he said the Dagupan Police Station was adjudged as the Best City Police Station in Pangasinan and Region 1 for 2018. (Leonardo Micua)
