Life in the Barrio: The “Mag-aatip.”

By Art G. Valenzuela

The “Mag-aatip.”(Nipa roof repairman)

THEY are a vanishing tribe as most roofing today are made of galvanized sheets or concrete. “Mag-atip” is a “neck-breaking” job as you have to keep your head in an upright position as you file the thatches on top of each other, one by one.

Nipa roof is not only beautiful but it is cool as well, literally and figuratively. However, maintaining this kind of roof is very expensive, though, as you have to change every 5-7 years or so. But the end result is pleasant to the eyes and to your lifestyle as could be seen in the last photo.
