Egg producers suffer losses due to hot climate
LAST week, eggs’ prices dropped by P4 apiece because of oversupply and smaller sizes from producers .
Francis Uyehara, president of the Philippine Egg Board Association (PEBA), said the high heat level is to blame because it causes eggs to shrink because hens have no appetite to eat.
But more worrisome for the producers is the high rate of mortality of egg-laying hens due to hot weather.
Uyeharab said egg producers are losing heavily today because of the factors created by the high level of temperature resulting in drop of egg prices to egg-laying hens dying, in addition to higher operating costs.
Meanwhile, jumbo-sized eggs in Malimgas Public Market were back to P260 per tray, higher by P20, compared to previous week’s P240 per tray, medium-sized eggs still sell for P160 per tray, sold for P5 to P6 apiece. (Ahikam Pasion)
