DENR, DPWH told to coordinate future tree cutting with Capitol

THE Sangguniang Panlalawigan urged the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to coordinate the implementation of future clearing or cutting of trees along national and local roads in Pangasinan for the purpose of roads widening, with the provincial government.

Authored by Board Member Vici Ventanilla, the resolution was just a reiteration of a previous resolution enacted by the ninth Sangguniang Panlalawigan opposing the cutting of trees along national and local roads within the province.

Vice Governor Mark Lambino, SP presiding officer, said the resolution introduced by BM Ventanilla does not run counter to the previous resolution enacted by the 9th SP authored by Sixth District Board Member Noel Bince.

He said the SP resolution authored by Bince, opposing the unnecessary clearing or cutting of trees along national and local roads in Pangasinan, still stands because it received an endorsement from DENR that stopped the mass cutting of trees along the Manila North  Road from Sison to Carmen, Rosales in Pangasinan.

Ventanilla explained the administration of Gov. Ramon Guico III seeks to balance the impact of road widening which requires the cutting of trees along national and local roads to ensure the safety of motorists and pedestrians and the environmental damage that may be caused if trees are cut down.

Hence, the need for coordination if both DENR and the DPWH still want to proceed with the cutting of more trees along national and local roads, particularly along the national highway from Calasiao to Urdaneta City that still teems with full-grown mango trees, to ensure the safety of travelers.
