DPWH: Heavy siltation of Pantal River cause flooding
THE perennial flooding in Dagupan City will continue unless the dredging of the Pantal River is completed.
This was stressed by Rodolfo Dion, District Engineer of DPWH, who estimated that some 450,000 cubic meters of silt or an equivalent of 22,500 truckload of mud should be removed from city’s main river, Pantal River, in order to minimize the incidence of flooding in the city.
Dion said, the volume of mud from the upstream settled from the mouth of Pantal River to the shallow and narrow river under the Quintos and Perez bridges.
The finding, he said, is based on the survey of DPWH on the amount of silt is found along Pantal River that causes flooding during rainy season.
Dion said the DPWH dredging machine stationed at the mouth of Pantal river is consuming some 1,000 liters of fuel every hour of the dredging operation.
He added that the problem caused by siltation is worsened by the narrowing river banks because these constrict the flow of the river.
The original width of the river is the length from end to end of Quintos Bridge, he said. (Nora Dominguez)
